We used an isolated, noindex WordPress lab rather than switching the production site’s theme. A temporary control created one core-block page and one simple menu, activated each free theme, collected measurements, restored Astra, and removed the temporary page, menu, and control endpoint.

Astra’s median FCP/LCP was 80 ms earlier on mobile and 56 ms earlier on desktop. It transferred about one kilobyte less and recorded three fewer resources. Kadence had a 7 ms earlier desktop TTFB, while Astra had a 9 ms earlier mobile TTFB. Both recorded zero layout shift and no long tasks in this workload.
Those differences are observable but not decision-sized. A hero image, web font, analytics tag, popup, page-builder widget, cache miss, or slower server response can outweigh them immediately. Our conclusion is not “Astra is always faster.” It is: both free themes provided a light foundation here, with a narrow Astra advantage in this specific run.

The official Kadence workflow centers on a visual header builder with separate desktop, tablet, and mobile controls, plus a Style Guide for global colors, typography, buttons, and branding. For a new content site that stays close to core blocks, that is a coherent free starting point. You can build the real article, archive, and header before deciding whether any paid Kadence product is necessary.
Astra Free: our pick for continuity and builder breadth
Astra Free is also a complete theme, not a blank canvas. Its current official comparison includes a drag-and-drop header/footer builder, responsive controls, global colors, typography controls, basic blog/archive options, and basic WooCommerce support. RankPlot’s production site already uses Astra, and our controlled Gutenberg workloads have repeatedly shown that it can remain light when the surrounding stack is restrained.
Astra is especially sensible when you expect to mix Gutenberg with Elementor, Beaver Builder, Brizy, or another established builder workflow. That does not mean every builder is equally fast; it means the theme is positioned as a flexible base across several ecosystems. If Astra already renders your templates correctly, the migration risk usually outweighs Kadence’s workflow preference.

That integration can be valuable if you intentionally want the Kadence stack. It can also create overlap if your host already provides backups and security or if you already pay for a block collection, membership system, or store toolkit. Price the stack after removing duplicated tools, not before.
Astra: a broader multi-builder toolbox
Astra’s ecosystem combines the theme with Starter Templates, Spectra, AI site generation, Elementor add-ons, and automation products in higher toolkits. Its advantage is breadth: a freelancer can use Astra as the common theme layer while different client sites use Gutenberg, Spectra, or Elementor.

These are not perfectly matched rows. Kadence’s new entry product is a theme-and-blocks bundle, while Astra still sells a standalone theme add-on. Astra therefore wins the theme-only paid-price comparison. Kadence may still offer better total value for someone who was already going to buy its Blocks Pro and templates.
Kadence says its products are annual subscriptions and an active subscription supplies downloads, new releases, security fixes, bug fixes, and premium support. Its documentation also says local and staging sites do not count toward limits and gives a 30-day refund window. However, the license FAQ still names older Express, Plus, Ultimate, and Lifetime Ultimate plans. We are not assigning those old site limits to the new Essentials, Pro, and Elite bundles.
Astra’s current page states a 14-day money-back window. It distinguishes introductory annual prices from renewal prices and lists current bundle limits of three, 10, and 1,000 websites. A site can continue after an annual license expires, but updates, new premium features, and premium support require an active license. Always verify the final cart because promotions, tax, currency, and packaging can change.
WooCommerce: No Evidence-Based Winner Yet
Both themes advertise WooCommerce support. Astra’s official free-versus-Pro table lists free basic WooCommerce support and additional Pro controls for product catalogs, single-product layouts, checkout, carts, and conversion features. Kadence’s current Pro bundle advertises Shop Kit with product galleries, variation swatches, upsells, checkout tools, and related store features.
RankPlot did not install WooCommerce for the paired T-010/T-011 test. We did not test a product archive, product page, variation, cart, checkout, account, payment gateway, subscription, email, or cache exclusion under both themes. Vendor feature lists are not enough to name a store winner.
If you run a store, clone it to staging and test the entire purchase path under both candidate themes. Include every payment, tax, shipping, subscription, variation, cart-fragment, and checkout extension you depend on. Choose the theme that preserves the workflow with fewer overrides—not the one with the longest WooCommerce marketing list.
Should an Existing Astra Site Switch to Kadence?
Usually, no. A theme migration can alter headers, menus, widget areas, template widths, archive layouts, breadcrumbs, typography, hooks, custom CSS, structured data, and WooCommerce templates. Our test does not show a performance gain that would justify that regression risk; Astra was slightly earlier in the paired run.
A switch becomes reasonable only when Kadence solves a defined workflow problem: for example, your team builds exclusively with Gutenberg, strongly prefers Kadence’s free header/global-style controls, and can reduce other design plugins. Test the actual site on staging, record before/after screenshots and metrics, and keep a rollback package.
Should an Existing Kadence Site Switch to Astra?
Again, usually not. The paired benchmark does not show a meaningful enough difference to rebuild a functioning Kadence site. If your current site is stable, accessible in your tested workflows, and easy for the team to maintain, keep it and optimize the content, media, scripts, plugins, cache, and hosting first.
