How RankPlot Tested Kadence
We tested in an isolated, noindex WordPress lab instead of changing the live site. A temporary control created the same core-block page and two-item menu under Kadence and Astra. After measurement, it restored Astra and removed every temporary page, menu, and endpoint.

Kadence was light in this workload. The page showed no measured layout shift, no recorded long tasks, and an LCP around 1.2 seconds in both viewports. Astra was roughly 56–80 milliseconds earlier on FCP/LCP in the paired run and requested three fewer resources, but that difference is too small and too environment-specific to justify a universal “winner” claim. Both themes produced a fast, stable core-block page in this lab.
The practical conclusion is simple: Kadence Free did not introduce a meaningful performance problem on this page. Your plugins, images, fonts, analytics, cache settings, and hosting can change the result far more than the narrow difference above. What You Get with Kadence Free
A visual header and responsive navigation workflow
Kadence uses a classic-theme Customizer workflow rather than requiring the Site Editor. Its official documentation describes a drag-and-drop header builder with top, main, and bottom rows, three placement sections per row, and separate desktop/tablet/mobile controls. In our test, assigning a standard WordPress menu produced visible desktop navigation and a working mobile trigger that opened the off-canvas menu.
This is one of Kadence Free’s clearest advantages for a non-developer. You can build a conventional site header, arrange menu items visually, and control the mobile navigation without installing Elementor. Some advanced items and conditional behavior belong to paid products, so check the exact module before assuming every header feature is free.
Global colors, typography, and buttons
The current Kadence Style Guide documentation shows one place to preview and edit the site logo, color palette, typography, and button styles. Global colors are available to the theme, core blocks, and Kadence Blocks. That is useful for a content site because changing a brand color or heading system does not require editing every page individually.
RankPlot did not test every Customizer control, but the core-block page inherited clean typography, spacing, buttons, columns, and table styling without a page-builder plugin. The result looked like a finished theme rather than a blank design framework.
A maintained free theme with a large install base
WordPress.org listed Kadence 1.5.2, an update date of July 24, 2026, and more than 500,000 active installations when checked. The directory listed WordPress 6.3 and PHP 7.4 as minimum versions. Those figures are maintenance and adoption signals—not proof of support quality or performance—but they make Kadence a lower-risk starting point than an abandoned theme with a tiny user base.
What RankPlot Actually Verified—and What We Did Not
- Verified: installation and activation on WordPress 7.0.2, a representative Gutenberg page, a single rendered H1, desktop navigation, an opening mobile off-canvas menu, same-page browser measurements, and clean restoration to Astra.

- Not tested: Kadence Blocks Pro, premium templates, Kadence AI, paid header/navigation modules, support response quality, or any paid license activation.
- Not tested: WooCommerce product archives, product pages, cart, checkout, account area, payment extensions, or Shop Kit.

This boundary matters because a theme review can become misleading when vendor documentation, a basic install, and a full production test are presented as the same kind of evidence. They are not.
Kadence Pricing in 2026: The Current Transition
The most important buying detail in this review changed during our work. On July 31, the official kadencewp.com/pricing URL redirected to a Liquid Web Kadence product page with three annual bundles:

There is a documentation mismatch to resolve before paying: Kadence’s license FAQ was updated on July 21, 2026 but still names Express, Plus, Ultimate, and Lifetime Ultimate plans with older site limits. Because the pricing page now uses Essentials, Pro, and Elite, RankPlot is not mapping those old limits onto the new bundles. Confirm the number of sites, first renewal price, included modules, and cancellation behavior in the live cart or with support.
The same official FAQ says Kadence products are yearly subscriptions and that an active subscription provides downloads, new features, security updates, bug fixes, and premium support. It says installed products can continue to be used after non-renewal, but updates, premium support, and premium template access stop. The stated refund window is 30 days. Treat those as general policy statements and verify how they apply to the new bundles.

Kadence and Astra both produced a fast, stable core-block page in the same lab. Astra had a small FCP/LCP and request-count advantage in this 20-run window; Kadence provided the visual header workflow that makes it attractive to design-focused block-editor users. That is enough for a narrow observation, not a complete buying decision.
Choose Kadence when the free header and global-style workflow fits the way you build. Choose Astra when its wider RankPlot production history, plugin ecosystem, or existing implementation makes migration unnecessary. WooCommerce and Accessibility: Important Limits
Kadence declared WooCommerce theme support in our environment, and the current Pro bundle advertises Shop Kit. We did not install WooCommerce for this review. This review therefore cannot tell you whether a payment gateway, variation plugin, cart drawer, checkout customization, subscription product, or cache configuration works correctly on your store. Test a staging clone from product archive through payment confirmation before changing a live shop.
WordPress.org lists Kadence as accessibility-ready, but that label is not the same as a guarantee that your finished site conforms to WCAG. Content structure, color contrast, menus, forms, popups, third-party blocks, and custom CSS can all change the outcome. RankPlot verified that the mobile menu opened visually; it did not complete a full keyboard and screen-reader audit.
